Unity, peace and development take centre stage as Alhaji Sarki Sanusi Mohammed ascends the Kyebi Zongo stool
The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has called for unity, peace and accelerated community development following the installation and coronation of the Abuakwa South NDC Chairman, Alhaji Sarki Sanusi Mohammed, as the Chief of Kyebi Zongo.
Speaking at the colourful ceremony in Kyebi on behalf of the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Ms Awatey described the event as a historic milestone for the Kyebi Zongo community and the Eastern Region at large. The ceremony attracted traditional authorities, political leaders and Zongo representatives from across the region.
Dignitaries present included representatives of the Okyenhene, the President of the National Council of Zongo Chiefs, NDC National Vice Chairman Alhaji Azorka, Eastern Regional Chairman Dr. Ing. Mark Oliver Kevor, as well as several Municipal and District Chief Executives.
According to the Regional Minister, the elevation of Alhaji Sarki Sanusi Mohammed reflects his proven leadership, long-standing service to the community and commitment to social cohesion. She expressed confidence that his reign would promote peace, progress and inclusive development within Kyebi Zongo and beyond.
Ms Awatey also used the platform to highlight key interventions by the NDC government under President John Dramani Mahama aimed at improving the welfare of the Muslim community in line with its 2025 manifesto commitments.
She cited the introduction of an additional Eid-ul-Fitr public holiday, expanded support for Islamic education through the recruitment of Arabic instructors and scholarship schemes, and the deliberate inclusion of Muslim women in flagship programmes such as the National Apprenticeship Programme and the One Million Coders initiative.
She further noted the reduction in Hajj fares for 2025, with assurances of further cuts in 2026, as well as government plans to establish Islamic mortuaries in major hospitals to cater for the religious and cultural needs of Muslim families.
“These interventions are clear evidence of the government’s commitment to addressing the long-standing concerns and aspirations of Ghana’s Muslim population,” the Regional Minister stated.
Ms Awatey pledged the full support of the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council and government institutions to the new chief, particularly in efforts to improve livelihoods and drive development in Zongo communities.
She urged residents of Kyebi Zongo to unite behind their new leader and work collectively to entrench peace, harmony and progress.
The ceremony concluded with prayers for wisdom, strength and divine guidance for Alhaji Sarki Sanusi Mohammed as he begins his reign as Kyebi Zongo Chief.
