DVLA Targets 2027 for Nationwide Rollout of RFID Number Plates

ACCRA, Ghana, 12th October: The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is targeting 2027 for the nationwide rollout of new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-enabled number plates as part of efforts to modernise vehicle registration and strengthen road safety.

Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Julius Neequaye Kotey, disclosed this while presenting the DVLA’s performance at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, October 12, 2026.

According to him, the Authority has completed the design of the new number plates, which are currently being piloted ahead of their nationwide introduction.

Mr Kotey explained that the new technology would enable access to vehicle information in real time and provide additional support for law enforcement in the fight against crime.

He said the RFID-enabled number plates would also create opportunities for integration with electronic road tolling systems.

The DVLA CEO emphasised that the designs were developed by the Authority’s in-house team without the payment of consultancy fees.

“The designs of this new number plate were carried out through by the staff of DVLA. There was no consultancy fee and no external influence over the designs,” he said.

Mr Kotey added that the reform was intended to improve vehicle security, reduce crime and enhance safety on Ghana’s roads.

As part of the modernisation programme, the Authority has also decentralised number-plate services to its regional offices to reduce turnaround times for vehicle registration.
