Driver in Tragic Achimota Highway Hit-and-Run Arrested After Police Chase, Family Confirms

The driver behind the horrific hit-and-run accident that claimed the lives of two former Achimota School students, Davida Asante Boateng and Lilian Akorli, has been apprehended following a dramatic police chase. The family of one of the victims confirmed the arrest, offering some closure to a heartbroken community.

The tragic incident occurred on the night of March 7, 2025, along the Achimota Highway. The victims, both proud members of the Old Achimotan Association 2024 (OAA24) and former Stopford House residents, were returning to the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), after attending the much-anticipated annual Achimota School bonfire celebration.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that a black Toyota Corolla struck the two young women, leaving them gravely injured. Shockingly, the driver fled the scene without stopping to render aid. Passersby quickly rushed Davida and Lilian to the nearest hospital, but their injuries were too severe. Davida succumbed to her injuries around 4 a.m. on March 8, with Lilian passing away later that same morning.

In an emotional interview with Alice Safoa, the aunt of Davida, recounted the sequence of events leading to the driver’s arrest. “The police apprehended the driver after a chase later that night. He reportedly sought refuge at the hospital, claiming fear of mob justice from eyewitnesses. After being treated for a minor health issue, he was sent back into police custody,” she revealed.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Achimota School community and UPSA, with students, alumni, and loved ones mourning the untimely deaths of two promising young women. Many have called for immediate action to address the persistent dangers on the Achimota Highway, a notorious hotspot for accidents.

In a heartfelt statement, the Old Achimotan Association 2024 expressed their grief and solidarity with the bereaved families. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our cherished members, Davida Asante Boateng and Lilian Akorli. Their memories will forever remain in our hearts,” the statement read.

The driver is now in police custody, and investigations are underway to determine the full circumstances of the accident. The authorities have promised swift justice, and many hope this incident will catalyze efforts to improve road safety in the area.

The tragic loss of Davida and Lilian is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent need for responsible driving and safer roads. Their legacy will undoubtedly inspire renewed advocacy for road safety reforms.
