Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, the former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on the government and stakeholders to ensure the enforcement of the vigilantism law and other related legislation ahead of the 2024 elections.
Speaking to Onokwafo Yaw Asiedu during his graduation at GIMPA, where he earned a doctorate in public administration, Dr. Ampofo emphasized that his research shows vigilantism has a detrimental effect on the democratic process and must be addressed with urgency.
Dr. Ampofo highlighted the historical harm vigilantism has caused since the fourth republic, stressing the need for comprehensive measures to tackle this issue.
He called on political parties to adhere to fair play, the electoral commission to maintain impartiality, and security agencies to create a conducive environment for citizens to exercise their franchise without fear.
He specifically referenced the chaos during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election in Greater Accra, pointing out that insufficient action has been taken following the Emile Short Commission report on the incident.
