Dr. Roland Srebour Urges Reinstatement of COVID-19 Hygiene Practices Amid Cholera Outbreak in Greater Accra.

Occupational therapist Dr. Roland Srebour is advocating for the reinstatement of certain hygienic practices implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing their importance in combating infectious diseases.

His call for action comes in light of recent reports from the Ghana Health Service, which have confirmed two cholera-related deaths in the Greater Accra Region.

In a recent interview, Dr. Srebour noted that the stringent hygiene measures adopted during the pandemic, such as regular handwashing, use of sanitizers, and proper waste management, played a crucial role in reducing the spread of not only COVID-19 but also other infectious diseases.

“We saw a significant decline in various infections during the pandemic due to heightened awareness of hygiene practices,” he said. “Bringing back these practices can help mitigate the risks associated with cholera and other communicable diseases.”

Cholera, a waterborne disease often linked to poor sanitation and hygiene, poses a serious public health threat, especially in densely populated urban areas.

The recent fatalities have raised alarms among health officials, prompting calls for immediate public awareness campaigns about hygiene and sanitation.

Dr. Srebour emphasized that educational programs should focus on promoting good hygiene practices, particularly in vulnerable communities where access to clean water and sanitation facilities may be limited.

Furthermore, Dr. Srebour suggested that institutions, schools, and workplaces should reintroduce routine health and hygiene protocols established during the pandemic, including regular cleaning of surfaces and ensuring adequate sanitation supplies are available.

“It’s essential to create a culture of hygiene that goes beyond temporary measures,” he stated.

“Sustainable practices can protect public health and prevent future outbreaks.”

As the Greater Accra Region grapples with this cholera outbreak, health authorities are urged to act swiftly. Community leaders and health workers are also being mobilized to educate residents on cholera prevention, including the importance of boiling drinking water, proper food handling, and maintaining clean environments.

Dr. Srebour’s advocacy for the reimplementation of pandemic-era hygiene practices highlights a broader need for a proactive approach to public health, where preventive measures are prioritized to safeguard communities against both old and emerging health threats.
