Dr. Rashid Pelpuo Champions Bold Review of Ghana’s Retirement Age for a Stronger Workforce

Minister-Designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, has ignited a crucial national debate on Ghana’s retirement age, calling for a bold and pragmatic review to align with the country’s economic realities and workforce potential.

During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 30, Dr. Pelpuo passionately emphasized the need for a collective, forward-thinking decision on the matter.

“There’s growing debate on raising the retirement age—some propose 65, others even 70. If individuals are still strong, skilled, and willing, why force them out?” he asserted.

He stressed that this must not be a hasty or isolated decision but one born out of national consensus, ensuring it strengthens both the labor market and the economy.

Dr. Pelpuo firmly supports a reassessment of the policy, but with a clear-eyed focus on Ghana’s economic preparedness. He envisions a future where experience is valued, productivity is maximized, and Ghana’s workforce remains a powerful engine for national development.
