Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo Criticizes NPP’s Last-Minute Appointments and Contracts – (AUDIO)

Dr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the immediate past National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed strong disapproval of the outgoing government’s last-minute issuance of contracts, promotions, and appointments.

According to him, such actions are unfair and place unnecessary financial strain on the incoming administration.

Speaking with Ahotor FM’s Emmanuel Romeo Tetteh during a visit by the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council to President-elect John Dramani Mahama, Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo described the move as a poor demonstration of leadership.

“It’s not fair that after the elections on December 7, the following Monday, people are suddenly being given promotions, appointments, and last-minute contracts. This not only puts undue pressure on the incoming government’s budget but also creates problems for those officers whose appointments could be frozen or reversed. It is not a mark of good leadership,” he stated.

A Question of Timing and Intent

Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for waiting until after their electoral defeat to engage in these actions, despite having had eight years in office to carry out such appointments.

He emphasized that rushing to make these decisions after losing power raises serious questions about governance ethics.

“If you had eight years to make these appointments and promotions, why wait until now, after losing the elections? This approach is not only troubling but also shows a lack of respect for the democratic process and the new administration,” he remarked.

Call for Restraint and Good Governance

Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo called on those involved in last-minute contracts and promotions to cease immediately.

He urged the Transition Team to address the issue and implement measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.

“Promoting individuals or awarding contracts just as a new government is taking over is not part of good governance practices. The Transition Team must put an end to this, and those engaging in these activities should refrain. It does not bode well for our democratic processes,” he said.

Reversals and Consequences

He also cautioned that some of these last-minute appointments and contracts could be easily reversed by the incoming government, which would only create further complications for the affected individuals and organizations.

“Why wait until this time to issue contracts or give promotions? People need to understand that the incoming government has every right to review or reverse such decisions. It’s better to avoid unnecessary conflicts and allow for a smooth transition,” Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo warned.

Budgetary Concerns

Highlighting the financial burden these actions impose on the incoming administration, Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo questioned the rationale behind committing the new government to significant budgetary obligations.

“You don’t commit a new government to budgetary problems by creating huge payments to contractors and other obligations at the last minute. If you were genuinely going to pay these contractors, why didn’t you do it earlier? Such actions are irresponsible and undermine good governance,” he concluded.

Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo’s remarks underscore the need for transparency, fairness, and responsible governance during transitional periods to ensure smooth and ethical transfers of power.
