Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Chosen as NPP’s Running Mate Amidst Public Scrutiny-Dr. Asante Otchere

The nomination of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) cannot be likened to a beauty contest. The approval by the NPP National Executive Committee reflects a strategic decision for the upcoming election, focusing on Dr. Prempeh’s partnership with Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, which is anticipated to hinge on their respective records in office.

Dr. Prempeh faces the challenge of defending his eight-year tenure alongside President Nana Akufo-Addo. The delayed nomination process has cast a shadow over the candidacy, raising questions about Dr. Bawumia’s autonomy within the party and his ability to lead independently amidst influential political figures.

Dr. Anthony Asante Otchere, a Senior Lecturer and Political Analyst at the University of Cape Coast, emphasized on Ahotor 92.3 FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show in Accra that the upcoming December polls will pivot on trust, credibility, and economic achievements, pivotal themes for the campaign.

The selection of Dr. Prempeh as the running mate was influenced by considerations of religion and the party’s strongholds. However, concerns have been raised about his temperament and public speaking abilities. Some Members of Parliament from the party have flagged issues regarding his perceived arrogance and disrespectful demeanor.

In a separate development, Professor Samuel Adu Gyamfi, a Political Historian from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), advised the NPP to ensure that Dr. Prempeh refrains from making unscripted public remarks due to his strong personality, urging a more measured and respectful tone in his public engagements.

The NPP’s National Executive Council unanimously endorsed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate for the upcoming December 2024 general elections.
