Dr. Ayine Defends Mahama: ‘Those who are in a haste to tag the President as a ‘Clearing Agent’ should hasten slowly’

Accra, Ghana – The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has refuted claims that President John Mahama directed him to drop certain high-profile cases.

Upon assuming office, Dr. Ayine terminated prosecutions against individuals such as Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Dr. Stephen Opuni, Dr. Johnson Asiamah, and Dr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, who had been facing various charges, including causing financial loss to the state.

This decision led to accusations that the President had influenced the process.

Addressing the allegations, Dr. Ayine made it clear that all prosecutorial decisions rest solely with him and that he has not been subjected to any directives or pressure.

“As Attorney General, I take absolute responsibility for all the decisions taken so far. I am not under any instructions or pressure to discontinue any case or to bring charges against one,” he stated.

He urged critics to refrain from branding the President as a “clearing agent,” emphasizing that prosecution decisions are independent of presidential influence.

“Those who are in a haste to tag the President as a clearing agent should hasten slowly because he is not responsible for prosecutions and has not directed me to drop any case,” Dr. Ayine asserted.
