Paa Willie, the National Chairman of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, has firmly stated that transportation fares will not increase despite the proposed 30% fare hike by the Transport Operators Union and some members of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana. They had earlier announced a 30 percent increase in transport fares effective March 7, 2024.
In an interview on Ahotor 92.3 FM’s morning show, “Ade Kye Mu Nsem,” hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu, Paa Willie urged Ghanaians not to accept the 30% fare hike.
Both the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana jointly released a statement, declaring a 30 percent increase in transport fares effective March 7, 2024. The release explained that the decision to raise fares was due to the government’s failure to address their concerns.
During an exclusive interview on Ahotor FM, Mr. Willie explained that the representatives of the Concerned Drivers Association were not authorized to make such decisions, leading to their suspension. He mentioned that there will be a meeting with the Transport Minister to discuss the situation, emphasizing that Ghanaians should oppose the proposed 30% fare increment slated for March 7th.
“Since tomorrow is a holiday, we’ve moved our meeting with the Transport Minister to next week. After the meeting, we’ll decide what’s best for drivers. But what we want to make clear is that there will be no increase in transport fares on March 7, 2024. As National Executives, we don’t agree with the decision to raise fares at this time. As chairman, I have suspended the members who represented us in that meeting where the fare increase was proposed,” he informed Citizen Kofi Owusu.
