Renowned and award-winning UK-based Ghanaian gospel singer, Diana Hamilton, rarely collaborates with her Ghanaian colleagues. So, what motivated her recent collaboration with Nigerian gospel sensation Mercy Chinwo, if not for exposure or attention?
However, the 2021 Telecel Ghana Music Awards Artiste of the Year has clarified that her decision to collaborate with international artists is not about leveraging their fame or popularity.
According to Diana Hamilton, her collaborations are guided by spiritual discernment and a commitment to finding the right partners who align with her music’s message and spiritual essence.
In a recent interview with Graphic Showbiz in Accra, she shared insights on her collaboration with Mercy Chinwo on her song The Doing of the Lord, emphasizing the importance of authenticity and impact over attention.
“Every song has a unique purpose and message, and I believe the person I work with must resonate with that purpose. It’s not just about creating music; it’s about touching lives and ministering to people. It’s never about who can bring the most attention to the song,” she explained.
“For me, it’s about finding the right artiste who genuinely connects with the song’s message and can convey its emotion in a way that inspires others as led by the Holy Spirit,” she added.
When asked about her limited collaborations with Ghanaian gospel artistes, Diana explained that logistical challenges such as time constraints and geographical factors often make such projects difficult. She was quick to emphasize that this has nothing to do with any negative feelings toward her Ghanaian colleagues.
“I would love to collaborate with my fellow Ghanaian artistes, but I’m not always around. I remember once I recorded a song intended to feature someone. After I sent my part to producer Kaywa, he rejected it because he didn’t like it. I had to fly down from the UK, redo it, and he loved the new version. It turned out to be a masterpiece,” she recounted.
For Diana Hamilton, the focus remains on producing music that ministers to hearts and aligns with her spiritual vision, rather than chasing attention or popularity.
