Desmond Ofei Not Qualified for Black Stars Coaching Role – George Afriyie

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president George Afriyie has questioned the suitability of Desmond Ofei for the vacant Black Stars head coaching position, insisting that appointing the former Ghana U-20 coach would be the wrong decision.

Ofei has reportedly emerged as one of the leading candidates to take charge of the senior national team as Ghana prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars are expected to undergo another coaching change following the anticipated departure of Carlos Queiroz, whose four-month contract, signed in April after the dismissal of Otto Addo, is set to expire.

Queiroz guided Ghana to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, marking the Black Stars’ first appearance in the knockout phase since the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

However, Afriyie, who previously served as chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, believes Ofei does not possess the required credentials to lead Ghana’s senior national team.

“If today we are looking for a coach for the Black Stars and Desmond Ofei is the answer, then we have a problem,” Afriyie said.

Ofei previously worked with Ghana’s U-20 national team and has reportedly attracted interest as a potential successor to Queiroz.

Afriyie also took aim at Queiroz’s tactical philosophy, despite the Portuguese coach’s success in guiding Ghana to the World Cup knockout stage.

“As for Carlos Queiroz, I don’t like his defensive approach. It’s old-fashioned,” he added.

The Black Stars are expected to regroup in September as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

With the qualifying campaign approaching, the GFA is expected to make a decision on Queiroz’s successor and determine who will lead Ghana into the next phase of the national team’s rebuilding process.
