Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi Sets the Record Straight on Asset Declaration

The Deputy Minister of Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has reaffirmed his compliance with constitutional requirements by declaring his assets promptly after assuming office. His statement, issued in response to recent media reports, underlines his commitment to accountability and transparency in public office.

In a Facebook post dated April 30, 2025, the Deputy Minister dismissed claims suggesting he had failed to declare his assets. He clarified, “For the avoidance of doubt, I filed my assets declaration with the Auditor-General on 28th March 2025 at 4 pm, and I have the official receipt to that effect.”

The clarification comes amidst intensified scrutiny of government officials following President John Mahama’s directive for all appointees to declare their assets by the extended deadline of March 31, 2025. The President’s ultimatum, first issued in February, warned of severe repercussions for non-compliance, including removal from office.

In his post, Ernest Brogya Genfi expressed disappointment over the inaccuracies circulating in the media, emphasizing that he has always upheld his constitutional duties. “It is essential that we maintain the integrity of public office by ensuring that false information does not overshadow the efforts of those who adhere to the law,” he wrote.

The statement was a response to reports revealing that several high-ranking officials in the Mahama administration had yet to comply with the asset declaration directive. This revelation has sparked public outcry, with many citizens calling for stricter enforcement of accountability measures.

The Deputy Minister’s swift action in declaring his assets has been commended by sections of the public and governance advocates, who see it as an example of the transparency needed within government circles.

However, the issue has reignited a broader national conversation about asset declaration laws and their enforcement. Critics argue that while compliance deadlines are crucial, the lack of a mechanism for public disclosure limits the effectiveness of the process.

As public discourse grows, Ernest Brogya Genfi’s proactive stance sets him apart, reinforcing his dedication to ethical leadership. “Leadership demands responsibility, and I am committed to fulfilling every duty that comes with serving my nation,” he affirmed in his post.

The Deputy Minister’s action is a reminder of the significance of asset declaration as a tool for building trust in governance. Whether others within the administration will follow suit remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Ernest Brogya Genfi has made his position clear.
