In a confirmation process many expected to be fiercely contested, Kumasi Mayor nominee Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi, popularly known as King Zuba, emerged victorious with overwhelming support. On Thursday, April 10, 56 out of 60 assembly members participated in the vote, with 55 endorsing his nomination and just one vote opposing it. This resulted in an impressive 98.2% approval rate, clearing the path for his tenure.
Now officially at the helm, the new mayor faces a monumental task: addressing Kumasi’s long-standing challenges, including inadequate sanitation, chaotic traffic congestion in the central business district (CBD), and pressing security concerns.
“Decongesting Kumasi is a top priority, but we want to approach this in a sustainable and collaborative manner,” King Zuba emphasized during his first address.
In a bold move to reclaim public spaces and improve order, he issued a clear directive to hawkers and traders encroaching on unauthorized areas. “If you’re currently selling on a pavement, adjust yourself. If you’re operating in the middle of any dual carriage road within the CBD, please relocate. Starting Wednesday, April 16, we will begin an aggressive exercise to rid Kumasi of filth and congestion. This is not about politics; it’s about transforming Kumasi into a city we can all be proud of,” he declared.
Mr. Ofori Boadi expressed confidence that the overwhelming support he received from assembly members would translate into meaningful collaboration to implement his agenda effectively.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, pledged his unwavering support for the new mayor’s vision, highlighting the urgency of the task ahead. “There is a lot of work to be done. With the Chief Executive now in place, my role will be to supervise and coordinate efforts to ensure the challenges of sanitation and congestion are addressed promptly and effectively,” Dr. Amoakohene stated.
Kumasi, often referred to as the Garden City of West Africa, has seen its charm fade in recent years due to urban challenges. However, with King Zuba’s proactive approach and strong backing from the assembly and regional administration, residents are hopeful that a new era of progress and transformation is on the horizon.
