Debt Exchange: Finance Ministry Disburses GH₵6bn to Bondholders

The Ministry of Finance has successfully disbursed GH₵6.081 billion to settle all outstanding payments owed to bondholders under the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP). This payment aligns with the government’s renewed efforts to restore investor confidence and stabilize the financial sector.

This action follows President John Mahama’s directive to clear all outstanding coupons while creating a financial buffer through the Sinking Fund to support future obligations under the program.

Additional GH₵3.46bn Credited to Bondholders

In line with the DDEP Memorandum of Understanding, an additional Payment-In-Kind (PIK) amounting to GH₵3.46 billion has been credited to bondholders’ securities accounts. This approach not only adheres to the program’s terms but also ensures smoother transitions in meeting bondholder expectations.

Building a Financial Buffer for Future Payments

A statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu revealed that an additional GH₵9.7 billion has been allocated as a buffer for the payment of the fifth coupon, scheduled for July and August 2025. This proactive measure is intended to safeguard against future uncertainties and ensure seamless coupon payments under the DDEP.

The statement emphasized President Mahama’s commitment to honoring all financial obligations while rebuilding trust in the government’s fiscal policies.

2025 Budget to Strengthen Fiscal Discipline and Transparency

Looking ahead, the 2025 Budget Statement is expected to prioritize fiscal discipline and introduce robust measures to ensure efficient public financial management. The Finance Ministry aims to curb wastage, prioritize essential spending, and promote transparency in the allocation of public funds.

This series of interventions underscores the administration’s dedication to achieving economic stability and restoring investor confidence, with a clear focus on rebuilding Ghana’s financial resilience.
