Community advocate and aspiring Ketu South Constituency Vice Chairman, Dan Jerry Sorokpo, has petitioned the Ghana Water Limited (GWCL) over a prolonged water shortage that has affected residents of Agbozume for years.
The situation, according to residents, has placed a significant burden on households, with schoolchildren among those affected by the difficulty in accessing reliable water for their daily needs.
Residents say the shortage has made it difficult for households to obtain adequate water for drinking, cooking, bathing and other essential domestic activities. Some residents are reportedly compelled to walk long distances or join queues at the few available water sources to meet their basic needs.
The situation has also raised concerns about its impact on schoolchildren. Some pupils reportedly have to wake up early to fetch water before going to school, while others spend considerable time searching for water or waiting in queues. Residents fear the situation could affect school attendance, punctuality and the general wellbeing of children.
Parents and guardians are also facing additional pressure as they spend valuable time and resources looking for alternative sources of water for their families.
In his petition to GWCL, Mr Sorokpo is calling for urgent attention to the situation and urging the water utility company and other relevant authorities to investigate the persistent shortage and take steps to restore a dependable supply of potable water to the community.
He says access to safe and reliable water is essential to the health, education and socio-economic development of Agbozume and should not remain a persistent challenge for residents.
Residents are consequently appealing to GWCL and other stakeholders to intervene and improve the water supply in the community. They believe a reliable water system would significantly reduce the burden on households and allow schoolchildren to devote more time and energy to their education.
