Customs intercepts marijuana worth GH¢11.2m at Akatsi; vehicle bears fake registration number

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a consignment of marijuana valued at GH¢11,208,000 at Akatsi in the Volta Region during an intelligence-led operation.

The vehicle transporting the substance reportedly bore a fake registration number, raising questions about its identity and the possible involvement of individuals in the suspected drug trafficking operation.

The latest interception adds to previous efforts by Customs and other law enforcement agencies to combat the trafficking of illicit drugs in Ghana.

In October 2025, the Customs Division, in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), intercepted 84 bags of dried cannabis concealed in a shipment at one of Ghana’s entry points. The operation followed intelligence-led investigations into suspected drug trafficking.

The joint operation formed part of efforts by the two agencies to disrupt the movement of prohibited substances into and through the country, with intelligence gathering and inter-agency cooperation playing key roles in the fight against drug trafficking.

The Akatsi seizure underscores the importance of intelligence-led operations in detecting and intercepting suspected narcotics consignments.

However, further details of the latest operation, including the quantity of marijuana seized, the circumstances surrounding the interception and whether any arrests have been made, are yet to be confirmed by the Customs Division.
