England manager Thomas Tuchel faced the cameras moments after the FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage draw in Washington DC on 5 December 2025, reacting live as the Three Lions were placed in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana, and Panama.
Known for his measured, analytical style, the former Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain coach did not hide the challenge ahead, describing the draw as “difficult” from the outset while making clear that no opponent would be underestimated – even the one he admitted he currently knows least about.
“It’s a difficult group – no question about that.
Croatia and Ghana are two regulars at World Cups, two proud and extremely strong footballing nations with a lot of experience on this stage. Croatia, we all know what they’re capable of – runners-up in 2018, third place in 2022, a golden generation that just keeps delivering. They have technical quality, physicality and that Balkan mentality that makes them so hard to break down.
Ghana are the same in their own way: athletic, fast, technically gifted, and they carry the whole continent’s hopes on their shoulders. They’ve knocked out big teams before and always raise their level in tournaments. They’re never an easy opponent, especially in a group stage when every point matters.
Panama – honestly, I don’t know too much about them right now. They’ve qualified again after 2018, so credit to them for that consistency, but I’m not deeply familiar with the current squad or their style at this moment. That will obviously change very quickly. We’ll do our homework properly, analyse them in detail long before the tournament starts, and make sure we know exactly what to expect. No team reaches a World Cup by accident, so we’ll treat them with the same respect and preparation as the others.”
Tuchel concluded on the overall challenge:
“Three opponents, three completely different styles, three tough games right from the start. That’s the World Cup. There are no easy groups at this level any more. For us it’s clear: we have to be ready from the very first match.”
