A criminologist at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Jones Opoku-Ware, has urged Mobile Money (MoMo) vendors to prioritize their security.
According to him, the large sums of cash frequently carried by MoMo vendors make them prime targets for armed robbers.
This comes after an attack that led to the tragic death of a female MoMo vendor at Krofrom in the Ashanti Region, which has raised serious concerns about the safety of vendors.
In an interview with the media, Dr. Opoku-Ware advised MoMo vendors not to operate in open spaces, as this gives predators easy access.
“Those small containers and umbrellas with chairs and tables expose their transactions to the public. This is a form of banking, though small-scale, so it should be well covered. They can get a shop and, if possible, have security on-site,” he admonished.
He further proposed that telecommunication networks should roll out stringent security measures as criteria for MoMo operations.
