Medical Sociologist Christopher Seth Appiah, has warned against using covid-19 as a ground for discrimination.
Patients who have fully recovered from covid-19 face stigmatization from some family members, friends and the community in which they live.
Seth Appiah in an interview on Ahotornews revealed that ” covid -19 is a disease that when you recover, you can not infect another person because you have recovered.”
Discrimination is an offence and if we continue causing stigmatization it will cause more frustration and people might not want that they will be taken to isolation centers. They will rather keep quiet and spread the virus to avoid stigmatization
Social stigma associated with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19)
The family of the 19 years old boy who died of covid-19 at the Walewale government hospital is facing stigma from community members.
An Aunty of the deceased in an interview mentioned that her friends refused to visit and console her due to the fact that they heard the boy die of covid-19.
“My colleagues were supposed to be with me and mourn with me but because they heard that our son died of covid-19 have abandoned me.” She said
He added that as we are fighting to help stop the spread of the virus, we should not add stigmatization, which can cause more harm to the country.
He also urged that as the number of recoveries increase, patient who have fully recovered will be released to the society from isolation centers, let’s embrace them and stop the stigmatization.
