The Suame District Court in Kumasi has remanded seven military officers and one civilian into military custody over their alleged involvement in the deaths of two men. The suspects are to reappear in court on April 22, 2025, as investigations continue.
The military officers, Lieutenant Selim Nikoi Neequaye, Lieutenant Emmanuel Abrokwa, Lieutenant Daniel Osae, Sergeant Kumi Edmond, Lance Corporal Ameyaw Desmond, Staff Private Ampah Felix, and Private Gyekye Best, face allegations alongside Thomas Adjei Mensah, a civilian driver at the 4th Battalion Infantry (4BN) Barracks in Kumasi.
Discovery of the Victims
The case came to light on Friday, March 28, 2025, when officers from the Suame District Police Headquarters responded to a report about two unconscious men found in a bush at Danyame, a suburb of Kumasi. The victims were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) but were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies were sent to the mortuary for identification and autopsy.
Tracing the Incident
The investigation began after Michael Osei, a brother of one of the deceased, Kwame Adu, filed a missing person’s report. Osei told police he received a distress call from his brother on the night of his disappearance. In the call, Adu claimed he and his friends had been detained by military officers on allegations of stealing an iPhone.
Iddrisu Mohammed, another relative, reported that his grandson, Kwabena Sarfo, was also arrested by soldiers in military uniforms. Both families later identified their loved ones’ bodies at the KATH morgue.
Survivor’s Testimony
Police investigations gained traction after interviewing a surviving victim, Christian Obiri Yeboah, popularly known as “Kofi Yesu.” Yeboah narrated that he and the deceased were apprehended by the soldiers, taken to the 4BN barracks, and subjected to severe beatings before being abandoned in the Danyame bush.
Military and Police Investigations
While the suspects admit to detaining the victims, they deny any physical assault, claiming the men were released unharmed. Police, however, believe there is more to the case and are working closely with military authorities to unravel the truth.
The case has sparked public outrage, with human rights advocates and residents calling for justice for the deceased and accountability for those implicated.
