Court authorises EOCO to arrest Manhyia South MP Baffour Awuah

An Accra High Court has issued a warrant authorising the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to arrest the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, in connection with an ongoing investigation.

The order was granted after EOCO applied to the court for authority to secure the MP’s attendance, arguing that previous efforts to have him appear voluntarily had been unsuccessful.

Lawyers for EOCO told the court that the Office had exhausted reasonable avenues to secure Mr Baffour Awuah’s cooperation. They also raised concerns that documents relevant to the investigation could be concealed, altered or destroyed.

EOCO therefore sought authority not only to arrest the legislator but also to search for and seize documents considered relevant to its investigation.

The latest development comes barely a week after an attempted arrest of the Manhyia South MP at the Accra High Court on September 23, 2026, which resulted in a confrontation involving EOCO officials, lawyers and supporters.

EOCO subsequently explained that the attempted arrest was part of steps to secure Mr Baffour Awuah’s attendance in an ongoing investigation. The Office said the MP had been invited twice in February 2026 but had not honoured the invitations.

Mr Baffour Awuah has, however, disputed EOCO’s account of the matter. He has maintained that the investigation concerns SIC Life Savings and Loans Company, a client of his former law firm, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners, rather than himself personally.

According to the MP, after receiving EOCO’s February invitation, he referred the matter to the Clerk to Parliament for advice. He said a representative of the law firm subsequently appeared before EOCO investigators on March 4, March 18 and April 30, providing information requested by the Office, including a written statement.

Mr Baffour Awuah has also explained that his former law firm was engaged by SIC Life Savings and Loans to recover approximately GH¢3.5 million invested with Equity Savings and Loans. He said the investment, together with accumulated interest, had risen to about GH¢14 million before a negotiated settlement was reached.

EOCO has not publicly disclosed the full details of the ongoing investigation. The latest court order, however, gives the Office judicial authority to proceed with the arrest of Mr Baffour Awuah and the search and seizure of documents it considers relevant to the case.

The development is expected to intensify attention on the dispute between the legislator and EOCO, as well as the financial transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans and Equity Savings and Loans that have featured in the investigation.
