Retired military guru and the mastermind behind the June 4, 1979 Coup and one time journalist, Major (rtd) Osahene Kojo Boakye Gyan has revealed that the spirit of insubordination on the part of the leader of the Ghana Army Gen. Alexander Odartey Lamptey after he refused to act on a command by the then Prime Minister Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, is what forced the country’s first president to make Ghana a Republican state instead of a Federal state which he (Dr. Kwame Nkrumah) so preferred.
In an exclusive interview with Kakeeku on the city’s hottest weekend morning political radio talkshow dubbed “YEPE AHUNU” oh Ahotor 92.3 fm, the retired officer said the arrest of Patrice Lumumba who was a friend of Nkrumah in Congo changed Ghana’s fortune.

He said the then Prime MinisterDr Kwame Nkrumah ordered the army leader then ,Gen. Wellington to go to Congo and free Lumumba which he refused, angered Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. According to him, Gen. Wellington refused to adhere to the very orders of prime minister Nkrumah sighting his reasons to be that he only take orders from the President and commander in chief of the Armed Forces and since Ghana had no President, but a prime minister, Dr. Nkrumah changed his preferred type of governance for the soon to be fully independent state to a more centralized governance style to enable him become leader and the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.

The old Soldier further explained, such insubordination were quite precarious in the days of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah unlike today and that in his effort to ensure a more unified country under one rule instead of a fragmented one, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah would later pronounce Ghana as a One-Party state which fetched him more and more enemies.
Osahene Boakye Gyan concluded that Osagyefo Dr. Nkrumah’s aggressive actions to support many African countries attain independence soured the very relationship between his government and the West which led to the West using the CIA to overthrow his government.
“Osagyefo at one time relied on the West to build the Akosombo Dam whereas at the same time had the Russians work on the construction of the Bui Hydroelectric Dam something considered abhorrent to the West and all these aided his subsequent overthrow” he said
