The Concerned Drivers Union has issued a three-day ultimatum to the government to take urgent steps to reduce and stabilise fuel prices or face a nationwide 30% increase in transport fares.
National Chairman of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, William Osei, popularly known as Paa Willy, said drivers have refrained from increasing transport fares for the past three years despite rising fuel prices and other operational costs.
According to him, the continued instability in fuel prices has placed significant financial pressure on drivers and vehicle owners, making it increasingly difficult for them to operate profitably.
“We’ve endured long enough. If the government fails to intervene within three days, we will be left with no choice but to implement a 30% fare increment to cushion drivers,” Paa Willy said.
He explained that the proposed adjustment would be necessary to help drivers cope with the rising cost of fuel, vehicle maintenance and other expenses associated with commercial transport.
The Union Chairman, however, said the association is only advocating a 15% annual adjustment in transport fares going forward to reflect changes in operating costs and prevent sudden increases that could place additional burdens on commuters.
He further cited the recent fare adjustment by VIP bus services, which he said increased fares by 35% about two months ago, while ordinary commercial drivers have continued to absorb rising operational losses.
Paa Willy therefore called on the government to urgently intervene and stabilise fuel prices, warning that failure to do so could lead to a nationwide fare increase and impose additional financial pressure on commuters.
The Concerned Drivers Union says it will announce its next course of action after the expiration of the three-day ultimatum.
