The People’s National Party (PNP) has strongly criticsed President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang for deliberately and completely disregarding the tenets of the Affirmative Action Bill.
In a letter issued on Thursday, January 23, 2025, and signed by the Chairperson and Leader of the PNP, Janet Asana Nabla, the party stated that the constitution mandates Parliament to pass an affirmative action law to protect women from systemic inequalities, for which Parliament had successfully passed the bill and assented by former President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo.
The bill requires the President to allocate 30% of all appointments to women; however, of the 42 ministers appointed by His Excellency the President, there are 35 men and 7 women, which makes the percentage of women as it stands, 16.
“It is disheartening to note that even with a woman as Vice President, this has had no significant impact on the inclusion of more women in the NDC government.”
“This administration’s failure to fulfill its constitutional mandate is unacceptable and a betrayal of Ghanaian women,” excerpts of the statement read.
The PNP, therefore, urges Mr. Mahama to do the needful by obeying the dictates of the constitution and making the 30% representation in his cabinet a testament to his commitment to women’s empowerment.
