COMAC to Engage Star Oil after Membership Suspension

The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) plans to engage Star Oil Limited to resolve differences and restore dialogue following the oil marketer’s suspension of its membership.

COMAC’s board, led by its chairman, has initiated internal procedures to encourage Star Oil to reconsider its decision. The board aims to promote industry-wide decisions through consultation, avoiding unilateral actions.

On Citi Eyewitness News on Wednesday, January 21, COMAC’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Riverson Oppong announced steps to reopen discussions. He stressed that differing views on industry issues do not turn parties into adversaries.

“We will have an engagement with Star Oil. The Board Chairman has put procedures in place to get them to reconsider,” Dr. Oppong said. He noted that managing over 200 oil marketing companies demands balancing perspectives while protecting collective interests.

Disagreements are normal in such a diverse group, he added, but they should not signal hostility. “Our interests might clash, but that doesn’t make us enemies.”

COMAC has scheduled a board meeting to address the matter. Dr. Oppong expressed personal regret that Star Oil opted to suspend membership instead of advancing its concerns through the chamber’s structures. “I wish they had stayed on the board so we could decide together,” he said.

Star Oil Limited announced its immediate membership suspension earlier, drawing widespread attention in Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.
