COHBS Western North Holds Maiden Regional Conference, Appeals for Government Support to Strengthen Basic Education

The Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS) in the Western North Region has held its first Regional Delegates Conference in Sefwi Wiawso, the regional capital, under the theme “Empowering Heads, Enhancing Education Leadership for Quality Basic Education.” The event attracted several dignitaries from within and outside the education sector.

Addressing the conference, the Deputy National General Secretary of COHBS, Mr. Ebenezer Bedzra, outlined key challenges confronting basic schools and the education sector at large. He appealed to the government to urgently intervene to improve conditions in schools in order to enhance effective teaching and learning.

Among the challenges he highlighted were the acute lack of classroom furniture and the need for better motivation packages for teachers, particularly those posted to rural communities. He stressed that addressing these issues is critical to improving the quality of basic education nationwide.

Mr. Bedzra also explained steps being taken by the national leadership of COHBS to ensure that the concerns of its members are properly addressed through advocacy and engagement with relevant stakeholders.

The immediate past Regional Chairperson of COHBS in the Western North Region, Madam Lucy Arthur Gyan, also spoke on additional challenges facing heads of basic schools. She called on teachers and education workers to remain committed and work even harder to improve educational outcomes across the country, despite the difficulties confronting the sector.
