Cocoa is Ghana’s backbone but the NPP overlooks the challenges faced by farmers – Cudjoe Adokpo

Former Eastern Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Cudjoe Adokpo, emphasizes that cocoa stands as Ghana’s backbone, expressing concern that the current government overlooks the challenges faced by farmers in this vital sector.

Mr. Adokpo highlights that during John Dramani Mahama’s tenure, the NDC implemented effective measures that could have significantly benefited the cocoa industry. However, since the New Patriotic Party (NPP) took office, these initiatives have been disregarded.

Commenting on the recent cocoa price increment, Cudjoe Adokpo criticizes it as the lowest in the nation’s history. He bases this assertion on the notable rise in the global market price of cocoa, reaching an unprecedented average of $10,000 per tonne, equivalent to GH¢130,000 at a conservative exchange rate of $1 to GH¢13. This calculation results in approximately GH¢8,125 per bag of cocoa on the international market.

In a statement dated April 5, 2024, titled “Review of the Producer Price of Cocoa for the 2023/24 Cocoa Season,” the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) announces an increase in the producer price of cocoa.

Signed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of COCOBOD, Joseph Boahen Aidoo, the statement indicates a surge of 58.26 percent, elevating the producer price from GH¢20,928 per tonne to GH¢33,120.00 per tonne.

However, speaking with Emmanuel Martey on Ahotor 92.3 FM‘s Simpieso, the former Eastern Regional Secretary of the NDC argues that this increment falls short. He accuses the ruling government of intentionally shortchanging cocoa farmers of their hard-earned income.
