Dodowa, Ghana – President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has announced that cleanliness will now be a core performance indicator used to assess the effectiveness of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) across the country.
Speaking at Dodowa during his Greater Accra Regional Thank You Tour, President Mahama emphasized the government’s renewed commitment to sanitation and environmental hygiene at the local government level.
“Cleanliness will become one of the key performance indicators for measuring the performance of MMDCEs and will determine whether they remain in office or are removed,” he said.
The President revealed that additional funding will be allocated to local assemblies to support them in implementing robust sanitation and development initiatives.
“More resources are going to be available to all assemblies to implement their development projects and carry out effective sanitation programs to keep our districts clean,” he stated.
As part of efforts to promote local accountability, President Mahama disclosed that cabinet will soon meet to discuss the decentralization of the sanitation budget, allowing each district to take full responsibility for its sanitation outcomes.
“Cabinets will soon meet on a decentralization of the sanitation budget and make every district responsible for its own sanitation,” he said.
He further confirmed that the National Sanitation Day program, recently revived, will now be observed monthly, with full participation from all confirmed District Chief Executives and their communities.
“And now that most of our DCEs have been nominated and confirmed, we will begin observing the National Sanitation Day program every month. This will be a revived monthly exercise involving all Ghanaians,” he announced.
This directive is part of a broader strategy by the Mahama administration to embed sanitation, cleanliness, and environmental responsibility into local governance, ensuring that every district plays an active role in building a cleaner, healthier Ghana.
