Grammy Award-winning American singer Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to an affray charge in connection with a violent altercation at a London nightclub in 2023.
The singer entered the guilty plea during a hearing at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, marking a major development in the high-profile case. Brown had previously denied more serious allegations, including assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon. Those charges were dropped by prosecutors following his guilty plea.
Brown’s friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray over the incident.
The case stems from an altercation at Tape nightclub in London’s upscale Mayfair district, where music producer Abraham Diaw was allegedly attacked. Prosecutors said surveillance footage captured the incident, which reportedly took place in front of numerous patrons.
Following the hearing, the Crown Prosecution Service stressed that acts of violence, regardless of a person’s celebrity status, will be prosecuted.
Chris Brown, who has been on £5 million bail during the proceedings, was allowed to continue touring while the case was ongoing. He remains on bail and is expected to return to court for sentencing on October 26. The affray charge carries a maximum prison sentence of three years.
The R&B superstar, who rose to fame in 2005, has won two Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album for F.A.M.E. and most recently for 11:11 (Deluxe).
