Chip-Embedded Passport To Be Rolled Out Today

Ghana is set to commence the issuance of chip-embedded electronic passports nationwide today, Monday, April 28, 2025.

This initiative marks a significant advancement in the country’s efforts to modernize and secure travel documentation.

The new passports incorporate a microchip that securely stores the holder’s biometric and photographic data, along with advanced anti-fraud features, including both visible and hidden security markers.

These enhancements aim to streamline international travel and bolster document security.

In addition to the technological upgrades, the passports showcase Ghana’s cultural heritage by featuring iconic Adinkra symbols such as Fawohodie (Freedom and Independence) and Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu (Democracy and Cooperation).

The rollout is part of a comprehensive reform agenda by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, which includes 24-hour passport processing, courier delivery services, an electronic tracking system, and a 30 percent reduction in application fees.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa emphasized the government’s commitment to delivering a seamless, citizen-centered passport service that is easily accessible and free from third-party interference.

The introduction of chip-embedded passports aligns with international standards and reflects Ghana’s dedication to embracing digital transformation and enhancing public service delivery.
