Chelsea Appoint Liam Rosenior as Head Coach on Long-Term Deal Until 2032

Chelsea Football Club has officially announced the appointment of Liam Rosenior as their new head coach, signing him to a six-year contract that runs until the summer of 2032.

Chelsea confirms Rosenior’s signing

In contrast, his previous contract at Strasbourg (originally a three-year deal from July 2024) was extended in April 2025 to run until June 2028—a remaining term of about two and a half years at the time of his mid-season departure.

The 41-year-old Englishman, who has impressed with his progressive, possession-based style and ability to develop young talent, arrives from Ligue 1 side Strasbourg—another club under the BlueCo ownership group that controls Chelsea.

The move comes swiftly after the Blues parted ways with Enzo Maresca on January 1, 2026, following an 18-month tenure marked by notable successes, including victories in the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup, but ultimately undermined by a poor run of form—one win in seven Premier League games—and irreconcilable tensions with the club’s hierarchy and ownership.

Reports highlighted disagreements over player rotation, medical decisions, and Maresca’s public comments, as well as his discussions with rival clubs, contributing to the breakdown.

Rosenior, a former player with clubs like Fulham, Reading, and Hull City, had previously managed Hull to near-playoff contention in the Championship before taking the Strasbourg role in 2024.

There, he guided a youthful squad to European qualification and built a reputation for innovative coaching within the multi-club model. His familiarity with Chelsea’s sporting directors, shared ownership structure, and alignment with the club’s data-driven, youth-focused philosophy made him the standout internal candidate.

The lengthy contract underscores BlueCo’s confidence in Rosenior’s potential to provide stability amid recent managerial turnover, signaling a commitment to long-term development rather than short-term results.

He is expected to bring several staff members from Strasbourg and could be in the dugout as early as the upcoming FA Cup tie, following interim spells by Calum McFarlane.

This appointment marks Rosenior as one of the youngest and least experienced head coaches in Chelsea’s modern history at the Premier League level, but his rapid rise reflects the ownership’s preference for coaches who fit their structured system over established big-name profiles.
