Ghanaian football fans have a deep love for the Premier League, with Chelsea and Manchester United emerging as the top English clubs cheered across the country, according to Southampton winger Kamaldeen Sulemana.
In an interview with Showmax, the speedy attacker opened up about the league’s massive following in Ghana and beyond, shedding light on why it captivates so many.
Sulemana attributed the Premier League’s global appeal to its competitiveness and unpredictability.
“The Premier League is not just big in Ghana, but worldwide. It is the best league in the world. It is very competitive, and comes full of surprises. That is something that excites fans, the fact that the Premier League is always full of surprises.”
When asked about the most supported English clubs in Ghana, Sulemana named Chelsea and Manchester United as the clear frontrunners.
“In terms of support in Ghana, Chelsea and Man United seem to be the most supported English clubs in the country. Obviously, my family supports Southampton, but looking from the outside, it has to be Chelsea and Man United, especially United.”
Kamaldeen Sulemana joined Southampton in a 25-million-euro move from Stade Rennais in 202 and has made 19 appearances, scored one goal, and assisted one in the Premier League this season.
Despite being a Southampton player, Sulemana’s observations about the popularity of Chelsea and Manchester United in Ghana are telling of the two clubs’ massive global following.
The Premier League’s popularity in Ghana is evident in the packed viewing centers and cozy living rooms where Ghanaians gather to watch matches.
The league’s global appeal and competitiveness have made it a favorite among football fans in Ghana and around the world.
