Cedi Recovery Not NPP’s Doing – Labour Leader Credits Mahama Administration – AUDIO!

Tema, Ghana – The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has firmly dismissed claims that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) deserves credit for the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.

Speaking on Yepe Ahunu, a current affairs program on Ahotor FM hosted by Nana Dogbe, Mr. Koomson rejected assertions that the cedi’s resurgence is the result of foundations laid by the previous NPP administration.

According to him, “The NPP was in power for eight years, and the cedi barely held its ground. They had no policies that significantly strengthened the currency. It’s misleading for anyone to suggest that their legacy is behind the recent appreciation.”

Mr. Koomson attributed the 16.7% rise in the cedi’s value between January and May 2025 to the effective economic management of the Mahama-led administration.

He highlighted a blend of prudent fiscal discipline, tight monetary policy, and increased foreign exchange inflows as the real drivers behind the currency’s performance.

He pointed specifically to the Bank of Ghana’s decision in March 2025 to increase the Monetary Policy Rate from 27% to 28%, along with sustained open market operations to mop up excess liquidity, as crucial interventions that helped stabilize the cedi.

“These are targeted, strategic measures taken by the current administration to restore investor confidence and strengthen the currency—not some leftover policy from the past,” he emphasized.

Mr. Koomson urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to remain focused on implementing policies that improve the lives of Ghanaians and not be distracted by the NPP’s attempts to claim credit.

He also called for accountability and cautioned against deliberate misinformation aimed at discrediting government efforts.

“The government should not hesitate to act against those who peddle falsehoods to derail national progress,” he stated.
