26 Die From Rabies This Year – Veterinary Department
Twenty-six persons have died of rabies out of 31 cases recorded in nine regions so far, this year. While the Greater Accra Region had the highest number of deaths; six, the Central and North East regions recorded four deaths respectively. The Western Region had three deaths, Western North and Upper West; two, while the Eastern, Ashanti and Upper East regions had one person die respectively from rabies. The Chief Veterinary Officer at the Veterinary Department, Dr Emmanuel Allegye-Cudjoe, disclosed this at the launch of this year’s World Rabies Day (WBD) in Accra last Thursday on the theme: “Breaking rabies boundaries.” Commemorated every September 28, WBD aims at strengthening awareness about the disease which remains a global public health threat and estimated to cause over 55,000 human deaths annually, with 56 percent of the deaths happening in Africa.Dr Allegye-Cudjoe expressed worry over the growing number of stray and unvaccinated dogs, particularly in urban and big cities like Accra and Kumasi where major cases of rabies were reported. “In 2016, the number of human deaths from rabies had escalated to 57 from 25, recorded between 2009 and 2011. Herman Kojo Chinery-Hesse, a renowned Ghanaian technology entrepreneur and the founder of theSOFTtribe, has passed away following a cardiac arrest. He died on Monday evening, leaving behind a legacy as one of Africa’s most influential figures in technology. Born in 1963 in Dublin, Ireland, Chinery-Hesse was a trailblazer in the tech industry, often referred to as “the Bill Gates of Africa.” His contributions have left an indelible mark on Ghana’s technological landscape. Chinery-Hesse founded the SOFTtribe in 1991, which has grown to become the oldest and largest software company in Ghana. KNUST student killed in gory accident at Taifa
A second-year Communication Design student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has tragically died following a horrific road accident at Taifa. The student, identified as Charles Sekyi Nhyira, was involved in the accident on Thursday, September 12, 2024. According to reports, the incident occurred while Charles was returning from a celebration of his birthday. Man beaten to pulp for attempting to buy items with counterfeit at Kejetia market
A man was brutally beaten by a mob at the Kejetia market in Kumasi after attempting to purchase items with counterfeit money. The incident occurred when the suspect, along with an accomplice, tried to deceive a trader by paying with fake currency. The woman, upon realizing the money was fake, raised an alarm, which quickly attracted nearby traders. While one of the suspects managed to escape amidst the chaos, the accomplice was caught and mercilessly beaten by the angry crowd.
