  • 6 arrested in connection with lynching of prison officer in Kasoa

    Six suspects have been arrested in connection with the brutal lynching of Lance Corporal Gideon Adu Boakye, a prison officer stationed at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison. The tragic incident occurred on 29th September 2024 at Kasoa Iron City. The Ghana Prisons Service confirmed that four females and two males have been taken into custody. The suspects have been remanded as investigations into the killing continue. Lance Corporal Adu Boakye had been on a visit to his relatives in Kasoa when he was allegedly attacked by a group of unknown assailants, leading to his death. The Prisons administration is working closely with the police to uncover the full circumstances behind the attack, while they have vowed to ensure justice is served. In a statement, the Prisons Service condemned the act of “instant justice” and cautioned the public to report suspicious activities to the authorities rather than taking matters into their own hands. They warned that such actions often lead to harm against innocent people.   • O’Reilly student murder: Deceased to be buried on October 18

    The family of O’Reilly student who was murdered by his schoolmate has fixed October 18, 2024 for his funeral. His distraught father, Enock Bortey Sackey tells Ahotor News the family decision is as a result of progress of the case at the La District Court. In a turn of event in the Republic Vs Godwin Mawuli case, Prosecutor, Paul Osei Adjei said the duplicate docket has been forwarded to the Attorney-General’s office. He indicated that, due to procedural requirements, it will pass through the Regional Office and Headquarters before reaching its final destination. To expedite the process, the investigator has been tasked with personally following up on the matter, given its significant public interest. In a stern address to the father of the deceased Edward Bortey Sackey, the judge emphasized that the docket preparation is complete and has been forwarded. The judge urged him not to slack off, advising him to maintain pressure on the police to ensure progress in the case. The accused, Godwin Mawuli, has been remanded for two weeks again, and the case has been adjourned until October 21, 2024. The judge urged Gordon Mawuli to get a legal representation.   • Mahama Promises Married Men Paternity Leave

    In a significant move to support new parents, former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has pledged to introduce a one-week paternity leave for married men and extend maternity leave from three to four months if elected in December’s elections. This announcement was made at the NDC Women’s Manifesto launch in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital.  Background of the Policy He said the initiative aims to ensure newborns receive adequate care during their early development stages, emphasizing the importance of both parents’ involvement in childcare.   • 26 Die From Rabies This Year – Veterinary Department

    Twenty-six persons have died of rabies out of 31 cases recorded in nine regions so far, this year. While the Greater Accra Region had the highest number of deaths; six, the Central and North East regions recorded four deaths respectively. The Western Region had three deaths, Western North and Upper West; two, while the Eastern, Ashanti and Upper East regions had one person die respectively from rabies. The Chief Veterinary Officer at the Veterinary Department, Dr Emmanuel Allegye-Cudjoe, disclosed this at the launch of this year’s World Rabies Day (WBD) in Accra last Thursday on the theme: “Breaking rabies boundaries.” Commemorated every September 28, WBD aims at strengthening awareness about the disease which remains a global public health threat and estimated to cause over 55,000 human deaths annually, with 56 percent of the deaths happening in Africa.Dr Allegye-Cudjoe expressed worry over the growing number of stray and unvaccinated dogs, particularly in urban and big cities like Accra and Kumasi where major cases of rabies were reported. “In 2016, the number of human deaths from rabies had escalated to 57 from 25, recorded between 2009 and 2011.
