Govt needs $562bn to complete energy transition by 2070 – Energy Ministry
The Ministry for Energy and Green Transition has revealed that Ghana will require an estimated $562 billion to fully complete its energy transition agenda by the year 2070 as the country finalises plans for a nuclear power project, with construction expected to begin by 2027. According to the Energy Ministry, a variety of ongoing projects, including solar mini-grids for island communities and the development of 33 new mini-grids, are evidence of Ghana’s steady progress. Speaking on the sidelines of a stakeholder engagement on Ghana’s Energy Transition Framework held on Wednesday, May 21, in Accra, the Deputy Director for Renewables and Green Emerging Technologies at the Energy Ministry, Dr. Robert Sogbadji, cited the development of 33 new solar mini-grids for island communities and other renewable initiatives. “As of now, Ghana is putting all efforts into adhering to our energy transition framework. Currently, we have more than 89% access to electricity. Energy transition is supposed to be nationwide and implemented by all regions and District Chief Executives. So, efforts have to be made to ensure that awareness is created to ensure that whatever activity or project they undergo, they also take into consideration the energy transition. “We need about $562 billion to…

Supreme Court dismisses second legal challenge to Chief Justice’s suspension
The Supreme Court has, by a 4–1 majority, thrown out a second lawsuit seeking to challenge the ongoing process to potentially remove suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo from office. This latest suit was filed by a private citizen, Theodore Kofi Atta-Quartey, who asked the Court to freeze the work of the inquiry committee set up under Article 146 of the Constitution and suspend the presidential warrant that effected the Chief Justice’s suspension on April 22, 2025. His application, filed on May 20, was dismissed as lacking merit on Wednesday, May 21. Earlier that same day, the Court, in a similar 4–1 ruling, dismissed a separate but related suit brought by the Centre for Citizenship, Constitutional and Electoral Systems (CenCES) seeking an interlocutory injunction against the process. The think tank had argued that President John Mahama’s suspension of the Chief Justice violated constitutional procedures and sought to invalidate both the suspension and the committee proceedings. Both cases were heard by the same five-member panel comprising Justices, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie (presiding), Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu, Yonny Kulendi, Henry Anthony Kwofie, and Yaw Asare Darko. Justice Asare Darko dissented in both rulings. The Court’s decisions effectively clear the path for the committee to continue…

Political Tactics and Propaganda: Dr. Tony Aidoo Criticizes NPP’s Motives Behind Chief Justice Suspension
Dr. Tony Aidoo, former Senior Presidential Aide and Head of Policy and Evaluation under the late President John Evans Atta Mills, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he describes as political propaganda surrounding the suspension of the Chief Justice. Speaking on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM, hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra, Dr. Aidoo accused the NPP of using the issue to discredit President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, barely four months into his second term. According to Dr. Aidoo, the NPP has a long-standing culture of undermining President Mahama, dating back to his first term in office from 2012 to 2016. He stated that the party’s current political maneuvers are nothing new and are aimed at setting a negative tone for Mahama’s second term. He further alleged that the NPP’s defense of the Chief Justice is a calculated political move, designed to maintain her in office as a means to cover up the party’s own record of corruption and mismanagement during its eight years in power. Dr. Aidoo emphasized that President Mahama has not violated any laws in suspending the Chief Justice, and described it as unfortunate that the Chief Justice…

National Service personnel to undergo military training from August 2025
The Management of the National Service Authority (NSA) has initiated discussions with the Military High Command on the implementation of the National Service Emergency Response Readiness Programme (NSERRP), a new initiative aimed at equipping National Service Personnel (NSPs) with basic military training. The meeting, held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, is in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to instilling discipline, nationalism, and physical fitness among Ghanaian graduates. The President first announced the initiative during his maiden State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2025. Speaking at the meeting, NSA Director-General Felix Gyamfi emphasized the importance of the training programme in building a more resilient and patriotic youth population. “The introduction of this military training is a step in the right direction and must be embraced by all and sundry as one of the indicators for resetting the country, particularly the youth,” he said. Gyamfi reiterated that all national service personnel will undergo basic military drills and orientation as part of their service experience, aimed at fostering a spirit of national development. Brigadier General Amoah-Boakye, who represented the Military High Command, pledged the Ghana Armed Forces’ support for the programme. He assured the Authority of…

Bawku conflict: Dr. Opuni Frimpong makes clarion call to faith-based organisations
Executive Director of the Alliance for Christian Advocacy Africa, Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, has emphasised the need for a collective effort from faith-based organisations to help end the protracted Bawku conflict. The former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana stated that it is time for churches and other religious bodies to play an active role in silencing the guns. Rev. Dr. Opuni-Frimpong made the clarion call in an interview with the media, expressing grave concern over the instability, which he said poses an existential threat to lives and livelihoods. “Where is the church? We cannot say we have nothing to do in the Bawku conflict. All the churches have people in Bawku. Where is Islam, the Muslim leaders? The police are doing what they can, but what about the faith-based organisations who have schools and other institutions in Bawku? “We can come together and embark on a peace march, engage the chiefs, youth groups, and appeal for calm. We must silence the guns, so faith-based leaders must come together and ask ourselves: what is our role in silencing the guns?” he admonished. His comments follow a resurgence of the conflict, which has claimed the lives of two police officers, left others…

IGP dispatches PIPS team to Yamfo over killing of nurse
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has dispatched officers from the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau (PIPS) to Yamfo and other communities in the Ahafo Region to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a nurse in the area. The PIPS unit, tasked with probing allegations of misconduct and ensuring accountability within the Ghana Police Service, was activated following the death of 30-year-old Richard Antwi Agyei, a nurse at the Yamfo Health Centre. Agyei was allegedly assaulted by police officers after his reported arrest at a known Indian hemp smoking and trading site in the community. He was later pronounced dead at the Yamfo Health Centre. Another resident, who was reportedly shot by military personnel during an attempt to disperse angry residents, is currently receiving treatment at the Sunyani Regional Hospital. The violent incident occurred on Friday, April 4, after a group of irate youth stormed the Yamfo Police Station, where the accused officers — allegedly from Duayaw-Nkwanta — had taken refuge. The youth, incensed by the news of Agyei’s death, attempted to set the police station ablaze. Last Friday, the PIPS team took statements from key individuals, including Nana Gyamfi Kumanini, leader of the Yamfo Youth…
