Carrie Underwood is making a comeback to her origins. The former “American Idol” champion will be taking on the role of a judge in the upcoming season of the singing competition, as per a source familiar with the show.
The Grammy-winning country sensation is set to join ABC’s “Idol” as a replacement for Katy Perry, as confirmed by the source to CNN.
ABC has chosen not to comment on the matter. However, CNN reached out to a representative for Underwood.
Underwood will be joining the returning judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan in the next season of “Idol,” according to the source.
Perry had earlier announced her departure from “Idol” after being part of the show for seven seasons. She disclosed her decision on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” mentioning how “American Idol” had “connected [her] with the heart of America.”
After winning the fourth season of “American Idol” in 2005, Underwood rose to stardom. Joining the show as a judge 20 years after her victory, she becomes the first “American Idol” winner to take on this role in the competition’s history.
TMZ was the first to report the news of Underwood’s new position on the show. The 23rd season of “American Idol” is expected to kick off next year.
