As part of the government’s flagship 24-Hour Economy Policy, the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) is poised to take the lead in rolling out the Model Market Initiative, an ambitious programme designed to modernize trading centres nationwide.
The initiative seeks to transform traditional markets into fully serviced, round-the-clock economic hubs that stimulate local commerce, enhance job creation, and promote inclusive growth.
The proposed model market will boast state-of-the-art infrastructure, including well-designed stalls, advanced storage facilities, upgraded sanitation blocks, cold rooms, and integrated digital payment systems to support efficient and transparent transactions.
Additional amenities will include childcare centres, women’s banks, police and fire posts, and other essential service points aimed at improving the safety, comfort, and economic empowerment of market users particularly women who form the majority of traders.
Highlighting the importance of the project, the Mayor of Cape Coast, Hon. George Justice Arthur, emphasized that the model market will play a crucial role in reducing unemployment and creating sustainable economic opportunities for the youth within the metropolis.
He made these remarks during a well-attended Town Hall Meeting, which brought together market women and men, traditional authorities, clergy, government officials, security agencies, and other stakeholders under the theme: “The 24-Hour Economy Market in Cape Coast.”
The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly’s commitment to championing this initiative positions the Metropolis as a key driver of economic transformation in the Central Region and beyond.
