Newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu is facing mounting pressure to reverse the centralized communication system implemented under his predecessor, Dr. George Akufo Dampare.
The controversial directive, which effectively silenced Regional Police Public Relations Officers (PROs), has drawn criticism for hindering the timely dissemination of crucial security information to the media and the public.
Under Dr. Dampare’s leadership, all official police communications were streamlined through a central authority, significantly limiting the ability of regional police commands to engage with the press.
This policy was met with resistance, as many believed it stifled transparency and delayed the flow of vital security updates.
Retired Commissioner of Police (COP) Alex Mensah is among those advocating for change, emphasizing that reinstating autonomy to regional PROs will improve public trust, enhance police-media relations, and allow for a more efficient response to security concerns at the regional level.
