There is an urgent need for the government and the appointing authorities to take a thoughtful and decisive approach when selecting Municipal and Metropolitan Chief Executives. Appointments should be based on merit—choosing individuals who are qualified, competent, and have demonstrated loyalty and hard work for the party.
According to Hon. Elikplim Romeo Akahoho, Executive Secretary of the Chamber for Local Governance (ChaLoG), prioritizing ethnicity or using backdoor channels to appoint individuals who have not contributed to the party’s victory is a dangerous practice. He warned that such actions could have severe political consequences and may jeopardize the party’s chances in the 2028 elections.
Speaking on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM, hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra, Mr. Akahoho emphasized the need for a long-term strategic approach. He urged the party to protect its recent electoral gains in areas like Tema West and avoid actions that could lead to voter apathy.
He expressed concern that many competent and experienced individuals who applied for District and Municipal Chief Executive positions have been overlooked during the nomination process. He attributed this to the inefficiency of current structures and alleged favoritism driven by ethnic biases—a situation he described as both unfortunate and politically inappropriate.
Mr. Akahoho cautioned party leaders at the national, regional, and grassroots levels not to betray the trust of dedicated party members who have worked tirelessly to bring the party back to power.
Looking ahead, he reiterated the need for the national executive team responsible for appointments to exercise due diligence. He called on them to prioritize party unity, national cohesion, and development by making appointments that reflect competence and loyalty, rather than political favoritism.
