CAF U-20: Jerry Afriyie Leaves Ghana Camp in Egypt

The 18-year-old striker left the Ghana camp on Wednesday morning after featuring in the team’s opening two matches at the tournament.

Afriyie’s departure was the result of a mutual understanding between the Ghana Football Association and CD Lugo, who reluctantly allowed the young forward to participate in the tournament. The Spanish club, struggling to avoid relegation, was initially reluctant to grant permission. However, Afriyie’s unwavering determination to represent Ghana at the esteemed youth competition ultimately convinced them to release him.

Last week, CD Lugo officially announced Afriyie’s call-up, stating, “Club Deportivo Lugo informs that our player, Jerry Afriyie, has been summoned to join Ghana’s U-20 national team for the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. After expressing his strong desire to be part of his nation’s squad, the club has granted authorization for the Albivermello striker to travel and integrate into Ghana’s training camp.”

Despite a brief stint at the tournament, Afriyie made a significant impact for the Black Satellites. He came off the bench in Ghana’s opening 1-1 draw against DR Congo and was instrumental in their 1-0 win over defending champions Senegal, assisting Emmanuel Mensah’s decisive goal.

As Ghana prepares for their crucial final Group C match against the Central African Republic, Afriyie’s absence is a major setback. Head coach Desmond Ofei must reassess his approach to compensate for the loss of the influential forward, who has been a key player in the squad for the past two years.

With Ghana well-positioned to secure a spot in the knockout rounds, the team will aim to progress without their standout striker. Meanwhile, Afriyie returns to CD Lugo enriched by his international experience, hoping to play a pivotal role in his club’s battle to retain their place in Spain’s lower division.
