C/R Minister Calls for Review of English, Maths and Science Requirements for TVET Admissions

The Central Regional Minister, Hon. Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah, has called for the removal of English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science as mandatory requirements for admission into Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions at the second-cycle level.

According to him, the continued use of these core subjects as admission benchmarks for TVET programmes is limiting the potential of many pupils and prematurely cutting short their academic and career progression.

Hon. Eduamoah expressed concern that the policy fails to recognise the practical abilities, technical aptitude and hands-on skills of students who may not excel in the traditional academic subjects but possess strong vocational talents.

He made the call at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Biriwa Technical Institute (BIRITECH), held under the theme: “Transforming TVET for Sustainable National Development: The Role of TVET Institutions.”

The Regional Minister advocated a more inclusive and skills-oriented admission framework for TVET institutions, urging education authorities to consider relevant subjects, competencies and practical skills as key criteria for enrolment.

He stressed that broadening access to TVET would help unlock the potential of a wider group of students, strengthen the skilled workforce, and better align technical education with national development needs.

Hon. Eduamoah further underscored the critical role of TVET institutions in job creation, industrial growth and sustainable development, calling for policies that support, rather than restrict, the growth of technical and vocational education in the country.
