Ghanaian entertainment critic, Lawrence Asiamah, known as Bullgod, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) significant defeat in the 2024 general elections to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s arrogance and misuse of power.
During a discussion on United Showbiz aired on UTV on December 14, 2024, Bullgod remarked that certain actions taken by Akufo-Addo before the elections, such as commanding chiefs to stand before greeting him, created feelings of disrespect among some individuals.
Bullgod also referenced a particular incident where the president told chiefs from Ekumfi that he had not developed their area because they had not supported the NPP candidate in previous parliamentary elections.
He expressed that Akufo-Addo’s attitude angered Ghanaians and ultimately led them to vote against his party. “Many things have been said, but I firmly believe it was his arrogance that cost them. When I saw the video of him instructing chiefs to stand before him, I was taken aback.
That meeting with the Ekumfi chiefs at Jubilee House, where he dismissed their concerns about the lack of development in their area, was shocking. He attributed it to their voting choice. I often wonder why no one challenges him directly. To me, his arrogance was paramount.
What does he expect once he leaves office—should people still listen to and respect him?” he questioned in Twi. This commentary follows the declaration of the 2024 general election results by the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, on December 9, 2024.
John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) triumphed with 6,328,397 votes, or 56.55%, while the NPP candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, came in second with 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.
The NPP also faced losses in several parliamentary seats, with notable figures like KT Hammond, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, and Henry Quartey among the casualties.
