BREAKING: Iran Announces Withdrawal from 2026 FIFA World Cup

Iran has officially announced its decision not to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to reports from Marca and various other sports outlets. The statement comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions, including recent military conflicts involving the United States and Israel that have severely impacted the country.

Iran’s Minister of Sports, Ahmad Doyanmali, made the declaration in an interview with Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA). He explained that the current circumstances make participation impossible, pointing to the assassination of the nation’s leader by what he described as a corrupt government. He emphasized that no conditions exist that would allow the team to compete in the tournament.

The minister further highlighted the heavy toll of the conflicts, noting that two wars have been imposed on Iran over the past eight or nine months, resulting in the deaths of several thousand citizens. Under these tragic and unstable conditions, he stated there is simply no possibility for the national team to take part.

Doyanmali also directed criticism toward the host nation, suggesting that if the World Cup were being held in a different country, the international community would have already taken action to revoke hosting rights due to the ongoing situation.

Iran had already secured qualification for the expanded 48-team tournament through strong performances in the Asian qualifiers and was drawn into Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. All of their scheduled group-stage matches were set to take place on United States soil.

FIFA regulations provide clear provisions for such scenarios. If a qualified federation withdraws or is excluded from the World Cup, FIFA retains sole discretion to determine the necessary measures.

This can include replacing the withdrawing team with another federation, typically by selecting the next highest-ranked eligible nation from the relevant confederation or following other established protocols to fill the vacancy and maintain the tournament’s structure.

The announcement has created uncertainty for the tournament organization, particularly in Group G, as FIFA will now need to decide on a replacement to ensure the group remains balanced ahead of the June kickoff.

This development underscores the intersection of global sports events with complex international relations and ongoing regional instability.
