Black Stars Lyon’s winger Ernest Nuamah suffers fresh ACL Injury

Ernest Nuamah ruled out for the rest of the season due to Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury he picked in Lyon’s 2-1 win against Lille on Saturday in League 1.

Lyon’s pursuit of a Champions League spot took a bittersweet turn on Saturday as they secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lille in Ligue 1, only to lose winger Ernest Nuamah to a potentially season-ending knee injury.

Lyon confirms Nuamah’s injury

The narrow win at the Groupama Stadium kept Lyon’s qualification hopes alive, but the sight of Nuamah writhing in pain cast a shadow over an otherwise triumphant evening.

The match had barely begun when disaster struck. In the fifth minute, Nuamah, a dynamic presence on Lyon’s right flank, lunged into a ground duel with Lille’s tenacious full-back Gabriel Gudmundsson. As the two tangled for possession, Nuamah’s knee twisted awkwardly under the pressure, and he collapsed to the turf clutching his leg.

The 21-year-old Ghanaian international’s anguish was palpable, and after a brief attempt to walk it off, he signaled to the bench that he could not continue. Medical staff rushed to his aid, and he was taken off the pitch to a chorus of concerned applause from the Lyon faithful.

Lyon manager Pierre Sage, visibly shaken, later confirmed the severity of the situation in his post-match press conference. “It doesn’t look good for Ernest,” Sage admitted. “He’s in a lot of pain, and we’re waiting for the scans to tell us more.

It could be a significant blow for us—he’s been vital to our campaign.” Initial reports from the club suggest a possible ligament injury, with fears that Nuamah could miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season—a devastating setback for both player and team with just over a month of the Ligue 1 campaign remaining.

Despite the early setback, Lyon rallied to secure the three points. Goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Rayan Cherki overturned an early Lille lead, courtesy Bafode Diakite.

The victory leaves them fourth in the standings, just one point behind third-placed Marseille and one ahead of fifth-placed Nice, with the tantalizing prospect of Champions League football next season still within reach. Nuamah’s absence could prove costly in the decisive weeks ahead.

Nuamah, who joined Lyon from Danish side Nordsjælland in the summer of 2023, has been a revelation this season. His blistering pace, deft footwork, and knack for delivering key assists—seven in Ligue 1 so far—have made him a cornerstone of Lyon’s attacking setup.

Teammate Lacazette praised his impact earlier this month, calling him “a spark that ignites our play.” Without him, Lyon’s depth will be tested, with Sage likely turning to the likes of Rayan Cherki or new signing Wilfried Zaha to fill the void.

For Lille, the defeat marked a missed opportunity to solidify their own European aspirations, and Gudmundsson expressed regret over the incident. “It’s never nice to see a player go down like that,” he said after the match. “I hope it’s not as bad as it looked. We were just competing for the ball.”

As Lyon await the results of Nuamah’s medical evaluation, the club’s fans are left holding their breath. A win on the scoreboard has kept their Champions League dream alive, but the loss of their young star could yet turn this season’s story into one of what might have been.
