Black Stars Budget Blues: GFA Ducks Transparency Call, Points to Sports Ministry

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is shifting the responsibility of making Black Stars budgets public to the Sports Ministry.

This comes after President John Dramani Mahama’s instruction to the GFA, through the Ministry, to be transparent and accountable during his State of the Nation Address stating; “there will be no secrecy in how much the government spends on national teams”. “I’ve instructed my office and the Sports and Recreation Minister to hold the GFA accountable to the people of Ghana.” He said.

President John Dramani Mahama speaks on the Black Stars and other sporting challenges while delivering the State of the Nation Address.

According to Henry Asante Twum, the GFA’s communications director, the Sports Ministry is now responsible for publishing the Black Stars’ budget.

”Making the budget of the Black Stars public is not the responsibility of the Football Association. It’s not! We don’t come at all,” he stressed in an interview.
“The farthest we[GFA] can go is to present the budget and it ends there”, he added.

This move is seen as a response to the President’s call for transparency in sports funding, particularly regarding the budget of the national team.

The President emphasized that the budget for the Black Stars should be made public since it involves taxpayers’ money. This demand for transparency is part of the government’s efforts to promote accountability in sports funding.

The Black Stars are set to face Chad in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on March 21, followed by a match against Madagascar on March 24.

As the team prepares for these crucial matches, the issue of transparency in their budget has taken center stage.
