Black Stars’ 1-0 Win Over Panama Boosts Ghana’s World Cup Qualification Hopes – Berekum West MP

Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Hon. Dickson Kyere-Duah, has hailed Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama in the Black Stars’ opening Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Popularly known as Stugard describes the result as a major boost to the country’s chances of progressing from one of the tournament’s most challenging groups.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Monday, the lawmaker said the triumph had not only strengthened Ghana’s qualification prospects but also united the nation behind a common cause.

“Football remains the most powerful unifying force in our nation, regardless of our political affiliations, ethnic backgrounds, religious beliefs or social status,” Hon. Kyere-Duah stated.

The Black Stars secured all three points against Panama in Toronto, Canada, to make an encouraging start to a group that also includes England and Croatia.

According to the MP, the significance of the victory extends beyond the three points earned.

“Mister Speaker, this victory is significant for many reasons. It has given Ghana a strong start in what many football pundits have described as one of the toughest groups in the competition, featuring football giants England, the experienced Croatian side and a determined Panama team,” he said.

Hon. Kyere-Duah emphasized the importance of winning opening matches at the FIFA World Cup, citing Ghana’s previous tournament campaigns as evidence.

He recalled that Ghana’s only other opening-match victory before this tournament came against Serbia at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, a result that laid the foundation for the Black Stars’ historic run to the quarter-finals.

“In 2014, Ghana’s campaign suffered an early setback following defeat to the United States in the opening match. Despite a spirited performance against Germany, we could not recover sufficiently to progress beyond the group stage,” he noted.

He also referenced Ghana’s experience at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“Similarly, in 2022, Ghana lost its opening match to Portugal despite an impressive display. Although we later defeated South Korea, that initial setback ultimately affected our chances of qualifying for the knockout stage,” he added.

The MP commended head coach and the entire technical team, as well as the players, for delivering a disciplined and determined performance under pressure.

“They carried the hopes and aspirations of more than thirty million Ghanaians and delivered a performance that has reignited national confidence, pride and belief,” Hon. Kyere-Duah said.

He further praised the team’s resilience and tactical discipline, insisting that the victory had placed Ghana in a favourable position ahead of its remaining group fixtures.

“The Black Stars have demonstrated resilience, discipline and tactical maturity by securing all three points in our opening fixture. The lesson from history is clear: winning the opening match significantly enhances a team’s prospects of advancing to the knockout stage,” he stressed.

Ghana will now turn its attention to its remaining Group L encounters as the Black Stars seek to build on their winning start and secure a place in the next stage of the tournament.
