Accra, Ghana – President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed the enduring legacy of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, describing him as an unshakable symbol of African liberation and a global icon of black identity.
Speaking on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at the official launch of the Black Star Experience in Accra, President Mahama underscored Kwame Nkrumah’s vision of Ghana as the beacon of black Africa and a pillar of pride for people of African descent around the world.
“It was envisaged that Ghana, the first country to gain independence, was going to be the star of all of black Africa, including the diaspora. And that is why Kwame Nkrumah talked about the black star, the African personality, and all that, to make us proud in our identity and who we were,” he said.
The Black Star Experience is a major cultural initiative under President Mahama’s 120-day social contract, aimed at repositioning Ghana as Africa’s cultural and creative hub.
It forms a core part of the NDC’s flagship Culture, Arts, and Tourism agenda, designed to redefine and celebrate Ghanaian identity while driving investment, job creation, and tourism growth.
In his address, President Mahama lamented recent efforts to downplay the role of Kwame Nkrumah in Ghana’s independence narrative, emphasizing that the late leader’s legacy is too profound to be erased.
“In the last eight years, attempts have been made to suppress the role Kwame Nkrumah played in gaining our independence. Indeed, people have said he’s not the founder of our nation. Not he alone could have founded our nation. But however you try to suppress the name of Kwame Nkrumah, it has gone beyond our hands. Kwame Nkrumah is a worldwide icon, recognized by the whole world,” he stated.
The Black Star Experience will feature year-round programming across entertainment, arts, and education, promoting Ghana’s rich cultural heritage while strengthening its place on the global creative map.
