Black Queens Secure Final Three Spot in CAF Women’s National Team of the Year

Ghana’s Black Queens have earned a well-deserved spot in the final three for the CAF Women’s National Team of the Year at the 2025 CAF Awards, announced on November 14, 2025, alongside champions Super Falcons of Nigeria and Morocco.

Black Queens makes CAF’s Women’s National Team of the Year.

Under Swede coach Kim Lars Björkegren, the team has enjoyed a remarkable revival, highlighted by their strong performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Black Queens topped Group C after a 4-1 victory over Tanzania, following a 2-0 loss to South Africa and a 1-1 draw with Mali. They advanced to the quarterfinals, where they defeated Algeria 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw, thanks to two crucial saves by goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan.

In the semifinals, they fell 1-0 to hosts Morocco, but bounced back to claim bronze in the third-place match, beating South Africa 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Goals and composure from players like Alice Kusi, Josephine Bonsu, Jennifer Cudjoe, and Nancy Amoh sealed the win, marking Ghana’s first WAFCON podium finish since 2016.

Now in the final three for the CAF award, the Black Queens face stiff competition from 2024 WAFCON champions Nigeria and runners-up Morocco. The awards ceremony will take place on November 19, 2025, in Marrakech, the same city where Ghana made its mark last year.

The team’s success is part of a broader wave of recognition for Ghanaian women’s football. Coach Kim Lars Björkegren is nominated for Women’s Coach of the Year, goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan for Goalkeeper of the Year, and captain Portia Boakye for Women’s Player of the Year. Midfielders like Stella Nyamekye have also drawn attention.

This moment reflects the growing strength and pride of Ghanaian women’s football on the continental stage.
